Is it 1904?

Let me first start by saying I am not an over the top bleeding heart women's libber. I am a 20something, independent, opinionated woman who thinks that everyone, regardless of gender, should have a say. Ever since I can remember my parents have always told me I could become anything I ever dreamed. I never in my wildest dreams would imagine I would meet someone who didn't think that! Let me explain...

I recently had a conversation with someone about Sarah Palin being chosen for the Republican VP candidate. I personally have strong views against her being selected, but that is not where this is going. I was speaking with another 20something friend about her views of the election. She comes from a strong republican background and her opinions are such. When we got on the subject of the candidates who are running I said "I didn't vote for either in the primary. I wanted Hiliary." Her reply to that seemed to jettison me back to the early 1900's when women had no rights, couldn't vote, didn't work, and were basically second class citizens to men. This was her response and I quote: "I do not think a women should be president. There are jobs for men and jobs for women. Women should not be presidents or preachers. Those are jobs for men."

I think Alice Paul just rolled over in her grave! I find it terrifying there are people in this country who still think like that. After everything throughout history that has changed because of the sacrifices so many women in the past have gone thru to get to where we are today, it is truly sad. The worst part of all of this is this friend of mine has two daughters. What is she teaching them? I can only hope the cycle will not continue.
